Quick answer: single-sink vanities usually run 24-48 inches wide, double-sink vanities 60-72 inches. Standard depth is about 21 inches (18 inches for tight spaces), and counter height is 30-36 inches - most people today prefer the taller 34-36 inch "comfort height".
Common widths
| Width | Best for |
|---|---|
| 24-30 in | Powder rooms and small guest baths |
| 36-48 in | Most main bathrooms, one sink with counter space |
| 60-72 in | Two sinks, or one sink with a generous counter |
Leave room to move
- Keep at least 30 inches of clear floor in front of the vanity.
- Allow 4-6 inches between the vanity and a side wall or toilet so the area is easy to clean.
- Check that the bathroom door and any drawers can open fully.
Floating or freestanding?
A wall-mounted (floating) vanity shows more floor, so a small bathroom feels bigger, and it makes mopping easy. It needs solid fixing into studs or blocking. A freestanding vanity is simpler to install and gives more storage below.
What to check before ordering a wood vanity
- What is included. Each listing says whether a sink, faucet or mirror comes with it - if it is not listed, it is not included.
- Plumbing position. Measure where your drain and supply lines come out of the wall and compare with the vanity's open or closed back.
- Finish. Look for a water-resistant finish, and wipe up standing water rather than letting it sit on the wood.
